After being influenced by Dr. Rhonda Patrick’s insights on the advantages of sauna visits for boosting health and immune systems I decided to incorporate it into my weekly routine. Initially, I started with one visit per week, while attending the gym. Then increased it to two visits, plus a one-time spa session. However, at first, I neglected to apply any special hair care products, and after a few weeks, I noticed that my long hair had started to become dry and damaged. After some thinking, I soon realized why and the importance of using the appropriate cosmetic products during sauna visits to eliminate any possible “side effects” and make it a 100% revitalizing experience. After thorough research and experimentation with different products, I have compiled a list of essential cosmetics for my skin&hair care in the sauna. Join me as I share my recommendations and some basic rules to optimize your cosmetic products bag during sauna visit and beauty routine.

Hair Care in a Sauna
First of all, my early sauna experience made me start prioritizing the health of my hair almost religiously i.e.
For instance, if I forget my hair treatment or an extra towel/heat cup for the hair, I prefer to skip the sauna session, and I highly recommend you do the same. Now, let’s dive into the essential steps I recommend following.
Hair Protection
To protect your hair from the heat, start by applying a thermal protection spray. I personally use Davines MELU protectant spray, which not only shields my hair from the heat but also has an amazing scent that I regularly receive questions about from women around me. Then, cover your hair with a towel, as I have found it to be more effective than a heat cap. Hair care in a sauna is crucial for preventing dryness and damage.
Hair Treatment
If you like to treat and nourish your hair with masks, this would be the perfect timing, as the sauna heat will enhance the mask’s effectiveness. I like to try out different masks for my hair, and currently, my go-to is the Davines OI Butter Mask, which works wonders with heat. I normally wash my hair during breaks and then apply a hair mask, leaving it on for 10-20 minutes during the next sauna session for the best result.
After Treatment
Don’t forget to complete your ritual with some after-treatment. After the sauna, brush your hair, and apply a liquid silk or leave-in treatment and hair oil for extra nourishment. I highly recommend the Lanza Healing Strength Silk Serum, which I apply on dry or towel-wet hair after a sauna, SPA, or at home on a daily basis. It leaves my hair shiny and well-moisturized.
Skin&Body Care in a Sauna
Before entering the sauna, it is important to cleanse your body and remove makeup to avoid clogged pores. I personally use basic micellar cleansing water from Garnier, which offers excellent quality at an affordable price. After, I recommend using a dry body brush for 5 minutes to prepare your skin for exfoliation. I got mine in the drugstore in the travel size.
Skin Exfoliation
After a few rounds in the sauna, your steamed and cleansed skin is ready for exfoliation. Spend 5-10 minutes on body scrubbing and 1-2 minutes on facial peeling (once a week). I highly recommend trying out the First Aid Beauty Bump Eraser Body Scrub, as it is my all-time favorite scrub. Remember to cleanse your skin before each sauna entry after beauty treatments.
Skin Nourishing
If you have some spare time, apply a face mask while reading a book or taking a quick nap. My absolute must-have is the Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal mask, which I have been using for the past year and it will be 100% repurchased again. This mask helps nourish, calm, and rejuvenate skin. After your sauna session, apply your regular face tonic, eye cream, moisturizer, and body lotion to hydrate your skin. As a part of skin&hair care in a sauna, don’t forget to restore your water balance with herbal tea and water. I usually bring a travel cup with peppermint or ginger tea.

To Keep in Mind
When trying out new cosmetic products during sauna visits, it is best to test them at home before using them in the sauna to ensure they are safe for your skin. Be cautious of any allergic reactions by testing them on a small area of your skin. I have been following this beauty routine for nearly a year, and I can confidently say that my skin is healthy and hydrated, my pores are clean and almost invisible, and my hair is shiny and well-moisturized. This routine has been 100% effective for me, and I trust that it will work for you too. With these essential cosmetic products during sauna visits and guidelines, you can enhance your sauna experience and reap the benefits for your skin, body, and hair. Take care of yourself and enjoy the rejuvenating effects of the sauna.
